Data Deletion

Places gives every user—including a person who has only messaged @goplacesapp and has not created a Places account—an accessible way to request deletion of their personal data and Meta or Instagram Platform Data.

1. How to request deletion

Option A: Delete your Places account in the app

When the account-deletion control is available, open Places and go to:

Profile or Settings → Privacy and Data → Delete Account

Review the deletion summary and confirm the request. Access to the account will be disabled promptly. A seven-day recovery period may apply before permanent deletion begins.

Option B: Request deletion by email

Email admin@getplacesapp.com with the subject:

Include enough information for us to locate and verify the data, such as:

  • The email address associated with your Places account, if you have one.
  • Your Instagram username if you used @goplacesapp.
  • Whether you want deletion of a specific submission, your Instagram connection, or all Places data.

Do not send your password, access token, recovery code, identity document, or other unnecessary sensitive information. If additional verification is necessary, we will request the minimum information reasonably needed through a secure method.

Option C: Delete individual items

Where available in the app, you may delete an unresolved submission or saved place directly. Places will show what is being removed and ask for confirmation. Individual deletion is immediate from the active user-facing account and is not recoverable through the consumer app.

2. Requests from Instagram-only or anonymous senders

If you sent a public Instagram item to @goplacesapp but never created a Places account, email admin@getplacesapp.com and provide your Instagram username and the approximate date of the message. We may ask you to confirm the request from the same Instagram account or use another proportionate verification method.

Unclaimed submissions from an unregistered Instagram sender are automatically scheduled for deletion after seven days. This includes the submitted link and related temporary extracted data. You do not need to create an account to request earlier deletion.

3. What we delete

Depending on your use of Places and the scope of your request, deletion may include:

  • Your Places profile and authentication association.
  • Your Instagram-scoped sender identifier, current username when stored, connection status, and related access credential.
  • Meta message identifiers and Places webhook records that are not required for a lawful security or compliance purpose.
  • Submitted Instagram URLs, content type, creator username, permitted thumbnail, public caption, and location tag when stored.
  • Saved places, names, addresses, coordinates, categories, descriptions, favorites, visited status, and attached Instagram items.
  • Unresolved submissions, processing state, provider results, and correction history.
  • Account-claim, verification, and ordinary support data that is no longer necessary.

We also instruct relevant service providers to delete personal data where required and technically applicable.

4. Timing

  • Individual saved place or unresolved submission: removed promptly from active user-facing systems after confirmation.
  • Anonymous, unclaimed submissions: automatically deleted after seven days unless claimed earlier; an earlier verified deletion request will be handled promptly.
  • Account deletion: access is disabled promptly. If a seven-day recovery period applies, permanent deletion starts after that period and is normally completed within 30 days.
  • Provider systems and protected backups: deletion or isolation follows the provider's applicable deletion and backup-overwrite cycle. Backup data is not used for ordinary product purposes and will not be restored except where required for legitimate disaster recovery.

We will acknowledge an emailed request and will respond within the period required by applicable law. After completion, we will send a confirmation or a request status reference when contact details are available.

5. Limited information that may remain

We may retain only information that is reasonably necessary to:

  • Comply with a legal, regulatory, tax, accounting, or valid law-enforcement obligation.
  • Establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.
  • Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
  • Demonstrate that a deletion request was completed.
  • Maintain aggregated or irreversibly de-identified statistics that can no longer identify or be linked to a person.

Any retained information remains restricted, is not used to provide personalized Places features, and is deleted when the applicable reason ends.

6. Disconnecting Instagram is not the same as deleting data

Revoking Places access through Instagram or disconnecting Instagram stops future authorized access. It does not necessarily delete information already stored in Places. To delete stored information, use one of the methods above.

Deleting an Instagram post or changing it to private also does not automatically delete a saved Places record. The Places user must delete that item or submit a deletion request.
